Attractions
Stevens Memorial Museum -
Build in 1970 and expanded in 1995, this facility carefully
preserves Salem's rich heritage. The museum features accurate
reconstructions of old-time law and dentist offices, hundreds of
native relics, Civil War mementos, tools, agricultural
implements, furniture, clothing and other captivating displays.
The museum is also home to the Washington County Historical
Society Genealogy and Historical Library.
Spring Mill State Park-
Spring Mill abounds in endless opportunities for recreation! The
restored pioneer village is a delight as you travel through time
to the early 1800s.
The John Hay House - This birthplace of John Hay, private
Secretary to President Abraham Lincoln from 1861 to 1865, was
built in 1824. As a writer, 1870 to 1890, Mr. Hay authored Life
of Lincoln and numerous poems. He also served as Ambassador to
England and as Secretary of State to Presidents McKinley (1898)
and Roosevelt (1902).
The Depot - The newest
attraction at the John Hay Center includes a railroad
station similar to the Monon station that served Salem for 70
years. It recognizes Salem's 1847 role in the organization
of the New Albany & Salem Rail Road and houses memorabilia
related to railroading in southern Indiana. It also features
a model railroad depicting a portion of the Monon route from New
Albany to Orleans. Already in place as part of the exhibit is a
restored 1929 Monon caboose.
Pioneer Village - Eleven old buildings recreate a "living
village" of the 1840s. Discover a cultural surprise in the
village as you absorb the differences of life for early settlers
in Indiana.
Salem Speedway - This high-banked speedway is famous for
ARCA, ASA, and I-Car "racing so fast... it's already history."
The Speedway has hosted many of the best-known names in racing.
Accommodating up to 10,000 spectators in its grandstand and
infield, Salem Speedway celebrated 50 years of speed in 1997.
Thunder Valley Raceway - All summer long, Thunder Valley
is home to exciting sanctioned dirt track racing by a wide
variety of racing machines. The track is in the Washington
County 4-H Fairgrounds in Salem.

Old Settlers' Days, Salem
Held at the John Hay Center. Pioneer craft
demonstrations, lots of music, food, storytelling, children's
